Life Plan Community

Life Plan Community is the current, consumer-preferred term for a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), a senior living community that provides independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing on a single campus so residents can age in place through changing care needs.

Why It Matters

The industry began adopting “Life Plan Community” as the preferred term in the mid-2010s, in recognition that “Continuing Care Retirement Community” felt clinical, transactional, and heavier than the actual resident experience. The term is used interchangeably with CCRC in industry publications, marketing, and consumer-facing communications.

The Austera Group Perspective

The shift from CCRC to Life Plan Community reflects a broader hospitality-focused evolution in senior housing language. The change is more than semantic. Communities that market themselves as Life Plan Communities tend to lead with lifestyle, planning, and future security. Communities that still market as CCRCs often lead with care and clinical progression. Both are true, but the language sets the tone, and the tone shapes how prospects feel about the decision.
