Senior Living Glossary

Independent Living

Independent living is a senior housing option for active older adults who do not require assistance with daily activities and want the lifestyle, amenities, and community of a purpose-built senior residence without on-site clinical care.

Why It Matters

Independent living communities offer residents their own apartment or cottage, restaurant-style dining, wellness and fitness programming, social activities, and typically some level of maintenance and housekeeping. The pitch is hospitality and community, not care. Because there is no medical component, independent living is not licensed the way assisted living and memory care are, though it is often part of a larger community that also offers those higher care levels.

The Austera Group Perspective

Independent living is the most competitive segment of senior housing in most markets, and it is also the segment where positioning matters most. Residents choosing independent living are making a lifestyle decision, not a care decision, which means the community’s brand, environment, amenities, and social atmosphere carry more weight than clinical services. The strongest independent living communities feel less like a senior residence and more like an upscale hospitality destination that happens to serve an age-qualified population.
